Selena Gomez has been vocal about her ongoing struggle with lupus, a chronic disease that can attack healthy tissue within the body. But this morning the performer made a shocking reveal when she opened up to her 126 million Instagram fans that she recently underwent a kidney transplant due to her illness.

Gomez says she took a break from the spotlight this summer, despite simultaneously releasing new music, in order to take care of herself. “I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she said in her post.

In a few intimate portraits, Gomez also revealed that actress Francia Rasia was her kidney donor. “There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed.”

Gomez has been attending fashion week events over the past few days, hopefully a sign that the worst is behind her. And along with the support of her family, friends, and massive fan community, we wish all the best to her as well as others living with this autoimmune disease. “Lupus continues to be very misunderstood,” Gomez says in her post, “but progress is being made.”

Back in 2015,В Selena first announced her battle with the disease, and she's remained impressively candid regarding her condition ever since. Amid nightmarishly inappropriate instances of body-shaming and other troll-ish behaviour, the singer has strategically used her fame and platform for spotlighted opportunity.

HerВ goal: To shed light on topics that have previously held stigmas in the entertainment world. Whether in terms of her mental or physical well-being, Gomez remains inspirational. Not only does she confront a potentially debilitating disease like lupusВ head-on, she's also confronting the bullies-and with class, no less.
